Let me just start out by saying I purchased one of those cheap department store telescopes years ago and returned it because it really was not that great. I purchased this 90mm AstroView to fill the long wanted void to gazing at the stars up close and personal. I must say I was shocked on the first day I took it out and saw the moon, then looked at Jupiter and its moons. I could see the bands on Jupiter! I recommend getting a barlow lens and possibly even an eyepiece kit so you can see in more magnification. I think my only gripe about this rig is that I have to manually track since it does not come with a motor to track objects. For a beginner telescope, this is to be expected. The quality of the optics far surpases those of department stores. I highly recommend this scope for beginners.

Bought this for my daughter for Christmas as her first telescope. Awesome! The thing is huge, gorgeous, and has the look and feel of quality. Viewing is amazing. If you want a starter telescope you won't have to throw away or upgrade any time soon, this will not disappoint.

Haven't had time to use the new telescope much but my grandson loves it! Perfect for my 4th grader to get a better look at the stars, planets and wildlife!

This telescope is great. Crisp images with enough available magnification to not disappoint. One thing that I will add to the other reviews is that this is not a pure beginner's scope. I am thoroughly satisfied with it but did not buy on a whim. Firstly, my primary interest is in observing the planets as crisply as possible with a fairly portable and low maintenance telescope. This is why I chose this medium aperture refractor. My first purchase was a $35 set of astronomy binoculars. After using these to observe the planets, I moved up to this scope. If you are looking to buy this before you are even sure about your/the recipient's interest, don't; at least not yet. The equatorial mount is wonderful to those who want to take the time to understand how to use it but could be off-putting to a more casual user. Also, I'm finding that to get the most out of this scope I'm going to have to put more money down for eyepieces, filters, and a travel case so I'm looking at another $200-$300 to really get the most out of it. If you think you may be interested in spending this kind of money on a telescope and accesories, I suggest buying a decent set of astronomy binoculars first to make sure. I find that I use my binoculars to confirm what I'm sighting with the naked eye before aiming this telescope at my target so it's not like buying a telescope makes a good set of binoculars obsolete. To sum up: wonderfull telescope but make sure that you're interested enough to merit spending $500-$600 combined for the scope and accessories to maximize it's potential. Do so by first purchasing an affordable but solid set of astronomy binoculars (my Celstron 7x50s cost $35) which will continue to be useful in assisting and augmnenting your viewing experiences.

For the price, it's magnification strength and specifications, including the overall quality both structurally and in the design characteristics, buy this. The quality is top of the line every part of this is heavy, sturdy and reinforced like its made of aircraft material, it has taken hits, it has fallen, and it doesn't have a scratch. As far as the quality of image and magnification goes, very incredible even on a night not so clear like tonight, where I live. You will see star clusters where you've always seen blackness, and where you once saw one star you will now see many. You can see everything these customer pictures show and truthfully Ive seen even better with this scope. It can see even the smallest shadows from the smallest hills and craters on the moon, it's hard to explain or show in a picture, the high definition and high brightness this scope produces under good viewing conditions. Yes you will see Mars, Venus, Saturn, Jupiter, even separate rings of Saturn or Jupiter given great conditions, and a good place. This is a great buy, and compared to others well others that are close in power are far more expensive.

Great product. This scope is way better than I expected. Bright and clear images of Jupiter , Saturn and Moon Surface as well as the brighter deep space objects. Easy to set up and lite enough to carry outside fully assembled. There is a little vibration in the stand which makes it difficult to focus but by installing an electronic focus on the scope there is no vibration issues at all. I highly recommend this telescope to anyone that wants a good quality eq mounted scope without spending a lot of money. I do recommend the Orion electronic focus for vibration free ease of use as well as Orion eq2 clock drive to lock in the object you are viewing.

My scope was delivered on a Friday night, and like anyone with a new toy (hah) I wanted to immediately look through it. But of course, it had to be assembled. I was expecting it to be a much more involved and difficult task, but assembly turned out to be extremely straightforward and took less than an hour. The instructions were fairly clear overall, though there could have been more pictures. I then loaded it into my car, and took off to spend the weekend camping out and stargazing at a county park north of town. Once it got dark out, I set the scope up and got it aligned. Even though I had never used an equatorial mount before, the instructions were again fairly clear-- just point the scope at Polaris with Dec set at zero. It even included instructions for finding Polaris based on the big dipper. Even though I'm not really a beginner I thought it was a nice touch. Views are good. Very sharp. The optics are of excellent quality, yielding crisp images all the way out to near maximum magnification. The included eyepieces are from Orion's Sirius line of Plössls, very decent mid-range optics. I used a 2x barlow I had from my previous scope to stretch the scope out to the Dawes limit with the 10mm piece (1820mm effective tube focal length, giving me 182x), and was pleased that even under less-than-ideal seeing conditions (smoke from California wildfires, high humidity, upper-atmosphere turbulence) I was still able to see significant amounts of detail on Jupiter and Saturn, and even see Mars very well. There was practically no color fringing around planets at low to intermediate magnifications, and only minor fringing at high powers. The focuser is just a rack-and-pinion type, no slow-motion controls. It's what I'm used to on my old 60mm scope though, so I am quite satisfied. This is a great intermediate telescope, and I'm very happy with my purchase.

It's our first telescope so I don't have anything to compare it to. I settled on the Orion 9024 AstroView 90mm after a fair amount of research. My 5 year old and I are really enjoying it. Seems really well made and looks great in the corner of the living room. We've had great views of the moon, Jupiter and it's moons and just a couple weeks ago saw Saturn during the lunar eclipse. I was surprised how clearly you could see Saturn's rings. I still have not set/aligned the finder scope or set the equatorial mount for easier tracking. I just manually move the scope around until I find what I'm looking for...and I use both controls to keep it in view. We bought a 2x Orion Barlow (Shorty) lens which is helpful too.

Great beginner telescope. It is very sturdy. It looks way more expensive than it is. My friends want to take it home with them. This was a great birthday present.

My husband loved his bday gift! You can see far with this little baby. It is a beautiful piece that compliments your balcony or living room. Nice for decoration as well :)
